Perseverance
Perseverance is commitment, hard work, patients, courage, and endurance. A person who perseveres has the strength, the will, the steadfastness, and the drive to accomplish anything, no matter what stands in their way.
My partner’s name is Joy and is from Beijing. Joy sent me the proverb; “nothing in this world is impossible for those who set their minds to it”. I was instantly reminded of the saying; “you can do anything if you put your mind to it”. As I began to think about Joy’s proverb I started to realize the connections it had with China.
China is longest surviving civilization in the history of the world. In the face of over 4,000 years of natural disasters, epidemics, invasions, and civil wars China has out resiled every other civilization, nation, country, settlement in the history of the world. The Mongol hordes sacked and pillaged almost every great civilization from Asia to Europe. Among those to fall to the Mongols were Rome, Hungary, Poland, and almost all of Russia’s major cities. China endured the Mongols’ campaigns for over a century.
1815-1914 is known as Britain’s imperial century. Around 10,000,000 square miles of territory and roughly 400 million people were added to the British Empire (but later removed). In spite of this china survived British imperialism, the East India Company (opium trade), and several opium wars.
Even in the face of modernization china was able to keep their traditions alive. My partner, Joy, believes that symbol of Beijing and all of china is the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is a giant imperial palace complex located at the center of Beijing. The design of the Forbidden City was meticulously planned to reflect philosophical and religious principles. The Forbidden City and the traditions that accompany it have not only been able to survive but thrive for 600 years. Faced with modernization China was still able to maintain the ancient structures without compromising the integrity of its sentimental past.
The ultimate display of China’s perseverance was shown in the 2008 summer Olympics. China left the world breathless with its extravagant opening ceremony unmatched to date. A spectacular display of China’s, rich, ancient art and culture. The sports facilities were the best of their kind, in the world. This was China’s coming out party since entering globalization in the 1700s.
After thousands of years China finally entered the world stage. With almost 20% of the world population, 1.4billion people, and the fastest economic growth in history China is looking more and more like the next world super power. China is the definition of Perseverance.
